In its devotion to the Confederacy, how ungrudgingly the state of North Carolina 
gave of its resources and men is now acknowledged by all well informed people 
to surpass that of any commonwealth which seceded from the United States' 
government in 1861, and in common with her sister states battled for her rights 
and no county within her borders contributed more to that end than Wayne County
