David Albert Grantham was the 23rd sheriff of Wayne County from 1878 to 1886. He was
sheriff at the time of the last hanging in Wayne County. Noah Cherry and two others had
killed a white couple, Mr. and Mrs. Worley in the Neuse Islands. David Albert was
commended for his handling of the case which might have otherwise resulted in a lynching.
Many of his descendants live in Wayne County.
