Contributed by John Blair Hagler Abner Faison was indeed a Colonel however he was Colonel of either a militia regiment OR a member of the Home Guard during the Civil War. Abner`s granddaughter Clara Dixon was schooled at Oxford University and in the same class was the Duke of Windsor. She and her doctor husband lived on the top of a low mountain at Black Mountain, NC and back in the 40`s my parents and I lived on the side of that same hill. I recall even as an infant having supper with Dr. and Mrs. Frank Howard Richardson and sitting on their porch looking down at the town and down the great Swannanoa Valley towards Asheville. This information is in a private collection at the Archives and there is even more there that pertains to the mode of living for people in the Duplin/Sampson/Wayne County area prior to the war with pictures. Can you imagine having 40 or more people come to where you live and for one reason or another having to spend the night? Having upwards of 15,000 pounds of cured hams, etc. it was no big deal especially with the number of field and house slaves that the Faisons and allied families had. ~John Blair Hagler, Raleigh, NC~
